Inspiring Grand Research Projects
Overview
MLKN-lab is part of a global movement to model complex systems.
MLKN.lab situates its structural framework within the contemporary paradigm of planetary-scale computational modeling and deep ontological mapping. Rather than viewing the organization of science in isolation, our methodology draws direct architectural inspiration from landmark consortia across the life, cognitive, and planetary sciences that seek to render complex, multi-scale systems intelligible through open, unified digital representations.
By analyzing the structural design choices of macro-projects—ranging from the multi-layered neural integrations of the Human Brain Project and the scalable cognitive architectures of ACT-R, to the high-dimensional spatial-temporal modeling of Destination Earth and the polyhierarchical taxonomy of the Earth BioGenome Project—MLKN.lab isolates universal principles of network topology, data resilience, and structural encapsulation. We translate these cross-domain strategies into the realm of science-of-science, establishing an analogous, high-fidelity mapping infrastructure that treats the entire corpus of human knowledge as a dynamic, self-organizing complex system.
Just as these grand projects map the brain, the Earth, or biological systems, MLKN.lab maps the structure of scientific knowledge. Below, we’ve organized these projects by discipline and highlighted their alignment with our work.
